I didn't want the license plate to hang below the bumper while wheeling or to interfere with the tailgate. I made this receiver mount to easily take it off while wheeling.
I am not a fan of winch bumpers that hang two feet off the front. On my XJ I cut up the grill to fit the winch as far back as possible. My wife was not interested in me cutting up the grill on her MJ so I had to think of some other way to mount it without killing the approach angle. I had been thinking about the space behind the front cross member, below the radiator for a while. It looked like there 'should' be enough room for a winch to fit there. After a few measurements and more thought, I ran across a thread on NAXJA where a guy stuck an M6000 in that same location. About that time I came across a great deal on an M8000, which has the same dimensions as the M6000. Problem solved! :clappy:
Test fitting and checking clearances.
It is up against the steering box on the driver's side and slightly offset to the passenger side.
Here you can see the clearance with the mechanical fan. The shroud is unbolted in this pic. I have since removed the mechanical fan and shroud and am in the process of replacing it with an electrical fan that gives me a lot more clearance. If I was to keep the mechanical fan I would have needed to notch the shroud.
I am also in the process of rerouting the transmission cooler line. Clearance is too tight for my comfort between the winch, cooler line, and harmonic balancer. It also gives me a good excuse to add a transmission cooler.
The fairlead probably barely sticks out further than the stock bumper did. I've got a hawse fairlead that will eventually go on once the wire rope is worn and replaced with synthetic.
