Commercial mower is the way to go, and if you want to save money get a used one. As long as they have been taken care of you can put a lot of hours on them. I got a toro groundmaster 72" with a diesel, and it's got around 4500 hours on it. It mows great and I got it for less the $1000.

I don't have knowledge on best brands but my parents just moved to a smaller house. Dad's selling his simplicity zero turn. it's not a Lowes/home depot junk unit. It was purchased new, at a dealer. He added a suspension seat, but other than that, no issues.
If any interest PM me and I'll get you pictures and details. They mowed 4 acres with it. I want to say it's 3 yrs old. Maybe work out free delivery and give me an excuse to head south and go wheel. :dblthumb:
 
I got a cub cadet Z force from tractor supply. It's an 05 and I've done little to nothing to it. I've been looking at the new 54" Z force they have now for 2999.00. Only thing I don't like about it is the new one doesn't have greaseable spindles but mine does. My buddy bjmac just bought a gravely 60" cout last weekend for 5k and zero % financing and he loves it. My dad has a gravely 60 and its a bad bitch.
 
I bought a Toro about 5 years ago that has mowed my 2 acres my dads 1.5 acres and my Grandmothers 1.5 acre yard at least once a week and the past two years several other yards that I did on the side and had no problems besides normal wear and tear( belts blades and 1 set of deck bearings which was warrantied!)

The main thing is buy a good welded steel deck and maintenance it! Mine is a 54" welded deck with 25HP Kohler
 
Another vote for Hustler. We have a X-One. I looked at all the top brands and ended up with the Hustler. This is our 3rd year with it and the only issue we have had is one spindle bearing that was replaced under warranty.

Like most others have said, I would suggest stepping up to a commercial series mower. I think you would be much more happy in the long run.

Most important thing to know ??? Is are you mowing 3-4 flat acres or a hill? I have about 70k plus in just mowers(silent partner in a lawn business) so you could say I know a thing or two about them :****: :****: call or pm me I can kill you with info!
 
I have a 2005 Hustler Z that I bought last year to replace a 1985 Cub Cadet 982. Both are 60" cut but the Z cut my mowing time in half. Take a look at a Ferris with the full 4 wheel suspension. I know two people that have them and love the smooth ride and they have been very reliable.
 
That was the best thing I did 11 years ago. My tires look just like hole shots. I've had a craftsman zero turn 50" since I built the house in 2005 and I bought the mower used. It's been a good one. Tougher than I thought it would be.
 
I bought a Turf Tiger 60" last year and mow 5 acres takes me right at 2 hours but alot of money for a mower 0 the thing that sold me on is cheap and easy to maintain they come with a suspension seat I like it
 
Cool machines zero turn is pretty sweet. They share a building that my wife's gymnastics gym is in (they are our landlord). They are new to mowers though. I drool over them all the time. They switch from a rider to a giant walk behind for steep hills. Amazes me how fast they mow our few acre lot w them.

Had ours since '04. Only complaint is the local tractor dealership that carried these has since stopped. So for anything model specific it's a trip one county over. Sofar we haven't had to make very many trips.
 
If your gonna be mowing any kind for hills your gonna need to step up the the big commercial mowers. Not real sure what it is about the lower tier mowers but they suck ass on hills. My Raptor SD will not stick to anykinda hill. Well that is till you figure out how to hit it.

Now the SUPER Z's here at work that's another story. I would take them on some of the hills they side hill on. Crazy.

All I've ever had was hustlers so can speak for others but I'm sure exmark skag and the other top brands are just as good.
 
Yup, lots of hill. Majority hill. That is why I am wanting a nice heavy commercial unit. Whatever I get will get knobby tires asap. It is a must. Nothing sucks worse than trying to retrieve your mower from the barb wire fence after it slides into it. :****:
