81 toyota project

the only reason i would probably go back to a full bodied rig is because of the weather, but with my removable cab now it works out pretty good. Other than that I love having an all tube design.

got some rubber on the wheels and on the truck. loaded it up to go to the exhaust shop

well since i got the 42 ive been sheering off hub studs... so I ordered up a set of Bobbys drive flanges but then got to thinking it would be nice still have locking hubs being welded up front. I have a few extra wheel hubs and hubs laying around so I dug them up and am going to try this out.

drilling and tapping the wheel hub for 7/16 hardware. got this all done yesterday and just waiting on new ring&pinion for the front to put it all back together.

rig looks awesome. will the wheel clear those bigger bolt heads? I have two in the garage with the studs blown off. hopefully that works out let us know after a couple runs :awesomework:

when i had my toyota stuff i drilled and taped my hubs to 3/8s but you have to use alen head bolts cause the wheels wouldnt clear the hex head bolts.

Ive heard of going to 3/8ths. With the 7/16ths is there still ample wall thickness on the hub?

The bolt heads do not clear the wheel center, I could have used allen head bolts that would clear but with this being the first test for me doing this i just went with regular bolt heads cause the allen heads were about 3 times more $$$. I will just have to put the wheel on before the hub and I am completley fine with that.

Theres your problem. :;

Bobby makes a 6 pin hub kit too.

I looked at that to but oredered a drive flange kit instead, then I thought of doing this so if this idea doesnt work or other parts of the hub start breaking ill put the drive flanges on

I believe 7/16 allen heads bolts dont stick out either but the washers still do. hopefully some day soon I will be saying what you have told me "when I had toyota suff".

there is still quite a bit of wall left, I think it should hold up just fine. If i measure from inside of threads to outside of wall it is about 0.124in thick and from the outside of thread to outside of wall is about 0.09in thick

here is a crappy pic to kind of show thickness

a little late on an update but i have been super busy

thanks for the pic Corey, I wish it would have been just the bearing. Ended up being broken pin in the hi-steer arm, bend the housing on the short side and the inner knuckle ball ears on the short side, and i had to fix it in a week to be in the naches for the 4th. so i ordered some parts and got to work the day i got home from truff truck.

had to cut the ears off the inner knuckle balls to get the birf out and then had to chop the shot side tube to get the inner axle out. a friend had a bare housing laying around so we went and got that. cut my diff guard, steering skidplate/guard and truss off the old housing to put on the new one. I also ordered the TG kingpins to get rid of the trunion bearings.

heres a few pics

how it sat for the week

that is all the pics i got, from here there was lots of grinding and welding and had 3 very late nights tuesday, wednesday and thursday so i could leave for naches on friday for the 4th.

Oh yeah, and after a few small trips around home, a day of abusive truff truck racing and a day in the rocks of naches not being easy on it... i am very pleased with the 7/16 bolt upgrade in place of hub studs, no broken bolts(was breaking stock studs about every trip out), the bolts have not loosened up and all and i found out that my wheels do fit, just barely, around the bolt heads to slide off.

Those six shooter arms are junk. The pins just sheer off. IMO you would be better just adding a fifth stud.

ill try the kingping pins out for a while and if they do break easily soon ill do the warranty and get some more, but eventually i would liketo be giving spidertrax a call:awesomework:
