Aight Cole you build these suckas' tell me what you think.

BRAINSTORM SESSION

For a KOH tire:
BFG Red Label (39")
BFG Blue Label (new 40")
Maxxis Trepador(40")
BFG Baja Projects

Red labels get it, but are weak in the sidewalls. Treps, stickier than BFG, and stronger sidewall
Projects strong sidewall not as aggresive or sticky.

My thoughts. Alot of guys had trouble on the desert sections last year. Might have been a product of not enough air in their tires.....? Stickies sticking too well and creating heat. I dont think you want a super sticky tire. I'm almost thinking the Projects will be the ticket. Did any teams run them last year?

The lovells were running a strange combination tire at XRRA springs errrr circa last year... cole, do you know what this combo was??

Solve your problems?

and brian, I'm sure if we could get some that would solve our problem. what is that, a project carcass with krawler tread? ???

Looks like it to me (from my arm chair web wheeling post)
Call BFG and ask for a set. :dunno:

I'm far from an expert so take my opinion with a grain of salt but I'd run 40" trepadors with 25 psi.

40 Trepadors:
Very durable tire that's sticky for the touch sections

25 psi:
This may seem like a lot but the downside of blowing a bead or damaging a wheel is far greater than the downside of having to try a ledge twice because you don't have as much traction as you're used to.

I'm a little concerned that if you run a non-aggressive tire with a lot of psi you'll *really* have to beat on your rig to get past difficult sections. That's my opinion, use it or discard it as you see fit.

To expound more on what vanguard posted, I would run whatever you are sponsored with. Tire selection isnt a major factor, tire failure is. All brands were experiencing failures last year. Get a NEW set to run just for the race. Prerun on your old set of rock racing tires, but a new set of Krawlers/Creepy Crawlers/Irocs/Nittos/Toyos/Trepadors/Whatever will work just fine. In rock racing, compound really doesnt matter much. I agree that it could be advantagous in JV, but I have never been there. Air them up to 15-20 psi and get it. I wouldnt want to gamble on Projects, you know how your vehicle works on Krawlers, and that confidence helps when your in the pilot seat. Avoid the bushes and dont hit every rock in the trail, that will make your tires last much longer.

Stauns & custom (read heavily reinforced) wheels might be nice in this type of racing. That could be enough to get you out of a tough situation and close to a pit crew. I have watched Jason Berger race his old buggy most of the way through a course with a cut tire riding on the Staun.

funny, one out of every 3.5 runs on an xrra course we've ended up with a flat. the BFG's aren't doing it for us at all. that's why we're looking at tire options. We finally are on the radar at Maxxis, and are looking to go that way if the money is right. We'll see, but we want something tough. Honestly, stauns might not be out of the question. if we can find a wheel thats actually tough enough to take the ****, we'd prob run it. steel with crazy big fuggin rings or what? is there a forged series that actually tough enough to not break. you can hammer a steel back out, reseat and air up and be on your way. one advantage. we'll see.

I am a BFG racer and could get the Baja tires if I thought they would do any good. I readlly like the sidewall durability of the Maxxis tires. but the new trep as bad ass in the rocks as it is....I think would be a detriment in the desert. Those things are SO SOFT, I mean like bowl of jello, and thats at 90 degrees, not 150 or so of built up heat though the sand.

I hadn't thought about Stuans, damn son they just made the list. I'm thinking now if I run Stauns, I can get away with staying with my Red Labels. Run 'em in every tire, we will be carrying a metric ton of tire plugs, and a powertank.....

Well the Baja TA's ie. "Projects" i beoive got the Lovells a 1st at Cortez, and Joachim runs them. I know they are tough as nails. Might be worth a switch for KOH, I have no idea..... Just looking for imput, and Cole, cause I know he has built these suckas.

If I was going to race I would run the BAJA TA's like the Lovells ran or the ones like the Baja trucks run. Those tires are badass, however the sidewall isn't thicker than a Krawler, its just a harder compound. The Bajas have 2 layers of Kevlar in them and 2 wraps of this other stuff that is Nasty strong. They seem to work well on the rocks for the most part also.

The 40" Treps may work also, I have only seen them on the internet so I don't know jack about them.

why not run concrete Krawlers? less tread to squirm and build heat.

These are softer than a Normal red label.

Dude the race is won in the rocks, Reds work better than anything out there. I was sold on them this weekend until I see something that changes my mind

Pistol Pete voice on "No Matt, the desert is where the race will be won. The rocks will not be a factor in the out come." Pistol Pete voice off :flipoff1:

I believe Matt showed everyone there that a Creepy doesn't really compare to a Red Label. If you don't believe me just ask Travis and Mark.

Yeah I think I sold Travis on Reds, and Mark wanted to ditch the rocks and 47's for tons and reds! Greg Stone has run both on the same rig and he said there is no comparison, he is the best judge IMO.

Just run more air for the race. 18-20# will help keep you from pinching the sidewalls.

I have not seen a better tire on the rocks than the Krawler. I have yet to see comparable buggies on the trail with Treps v Krawlers, but I have seen the Crawler v Krawler and I like the Krawler better.

It made up my mind on the tires going on the new buggy after seeing how Matt's worked. I could tell the difference back when Greg switched to the creepys that they just didnt have near the traction the crawlers have. Only difference is he isnt cutting tires every other trip now.
