Only difference is he isnt cutting tires every other trip now.

Thats the trade off from what I've seen. Reds flat work, but be prepared to repair sidewalls and replace tires. Only other downside, is the lack of Contingency money running BFG's. Maxxis tosses a nice check for a #1 on their tires.

I would not worry about tires if I were you. There are plenty of others things to worry about for the race. I will steal all of cole's reds and bring them for us to use as spares :flipoff1:

Knowing the pros/cons of each I would lean towards the reds just because sometimes more traction means less work to get up an obstacle. I have seen both with sidewall tears. If you were going to be a pure desert racer then the baja is a no brainer, but they are heavy and would not make great rockcrawling tires IMO

I totally agree Matt, but I think the Bajas warrant a look with regards to west XRRA and KOH type environments.
Me, and reds, well thats the reason I carry two spares on the trailer. Last race Josh Murray and I had to speed swap to both be using my plugging kit at the same time to plug guess what??????????? Red sidewalls.
Was kinda funny......like when you and your wingman back in the day would be tagging two chicks side by side, You look over, and there he is going to town, and all you can do is high five 'em and get back to work. loller.gif

in my opinion if air pressure is the issue, to low pinch side walls, to high, shitty performance, why not run CTIS... i mean there are purpose built rigs for KOH, so why not add this feature too.... best of both worlds....

Sorry guys this got a bit off course, I'm not pinching sidewalls due to low pressure. I'm running 12psi front and 10psi rear. I am not and have not pinched a sidewall. I have punchered 3 sidewalls from rocks tearing them, i.e. punching holes in them.

Would running Stauns help? I have thought about that before, I know Tom Wayes ran them last year and drove for a while with a flat Creepy.

Thats fine with me as long as you replace what you destroy. Hopefully by then my stash will have grown. ;)

All I remember from XRRA 06 was Dave Smith having gashes in his sidewalls of his BFG reds. Sucks because although you are a BFG racer, I know you DO pay for them.

Gotta pay 2 play. I'd be tempted to experiment with the different flavors of the BFG comp. line if I were a racer for them...

I can try to get you a free set of inner airlocks - interested?

One thing that people running internal beadlocks with tubes is that:

the inner tube is at say 30psi and they will pop at 60ish
say your running 10 psi in the tire
anything over the psi of the inner tube will start to compress the air in the inner tube

I've seen it first hand when installing them

air the inner tube to 10 then the tire to 15 and the tube will be at 20 or something

Now what happens is with your tire at 10 and say you jump and land - the air in the tire is compressed violently and the pressure becomes much greater than 10 and could possibly pop the tube. Some think that it's the tube hitting the ground or pinching that causes the failure but it's not.

So if you run 2 psi and jump it you run the risk of landing on the tube and popping it
up it to 10 or higher and you run the risk of increasing the pressure too great - however the tire at 15-20 will "squat" less and not compress as much

I hope that my long winded response makes sense - it does in my head

Second note - I wouldn't expect any internal beadlock with an inner tube to withstand being driven on as a runflat for too long, especially in a KOH style race. They are designed to keep the tire on the bead not as a runflat but they do function as that but still I wouldn't be counting on it.

what are these things againcole? I thought the projects looked like holeshots off the front of a quad with square ass sidewalls. why the krawler print? different compound?

I am not sure of the exact name, I will find out when I go back to work Thursday. They are just another version of the BAJA tire. They are built the same was as the normal baja tires. They Compound might be a little different but they feel about the same as the rest of the BAJA tires to me. We make 3 or 4 different baja tires and we have been building a few special tires for other racers. I don't know a lot about them though.
They don't really tell us anything about them but I usually bug the crap out of them to try and get information.

Those tires are Badass, you can get on some desert forums and buy used ones fairly cheap if I am not mistaken.

or, if you're wyatt, buy some new at racer cost. I guess I'm wondering if that's a project sidewall (tough) with a different compound? diff tread only? what are they

What do you mean by Project sidewall?
I think the tires have the initials KR on them somewhere. Go to the Baja section on Pirate and ask about them.
