I can understand Shannon not being comfortable driving on 37s when he is used to that rig on 39's

Derek said the compound was actually softer than the Red's. I squeezed them in Attica and thought it was hard as ****, but apparently not.

Cole, tell us about what makes them so much more durable than the Krawlers, sidewall beef, belts, etc.....

I asked Shannon what he thought about them on the course. He said I ran one lap of one race with them if that sums it up for you. He said they don't hook like reds and they made his rig feel loose and out of control. He said that his rig was built for Red Labels, and the lack of traction and extra width of those KRT's didn't work for him.

Love it when you talk technical :flipoff1:

I can't be giving away the trade secrets :flipoff1: Seriously not supposed to give detailed information.
It's hard to explain. There is just more material in these tires. The sidewalls are a lot thicker and made of a tougher material. I believe this is the material they want to start using in the red label side wall. There is lots of Kevlar in them.
Where as the Red label only has 2 steel belts and less material, guess thats what helps them hook up so well.
The KRT's are not as soft as a red label, but supposedly when they heat up they get real sticky, I don't know :dunno:

If I was running the KOH I would run the KRT's, if they can last in the Baja 1000 then they are good enough for KOH.

**** not running them after the race wyatt, Im impressed with every set I've seen run. the abuse and the hook. who took second? Shannon gave me the impression he didn't hook on them because he's too light for the width. we have the weight in the front to make them hook.

Everyone will be running a lot more pressure this year at KOH. With the added pressure you will therefore have less bulge in the sidewall = less traction. I would rather have a desert racing tire in the rocks out there for the race than a rock crawling tire with too much pressure in them to hook up correctly.

The race will be won in the rocks, but the rocks at JV are not that hard and these tires will be just fine.

meaning the KRT will be fine, or the Red Lable will be fine. I am 100% up in the air on the whole which tires to run deal. I appreciate your advide Nolen. youve seen both work, and you've wheeled JV on reds.

A tough tire is a better tire than a sticky tire in a race like this in my opinion. If you can get some KRTs, that is what I would run.

I think a 39" TSL would actually be the best tire for this race. 8)

out on that. why do I ruin tsl's every time I go out.
I like the KRT. Paul and I saw west's rig come down that hil on the inside track turning into a rock with all the weight on that tire and smack it unitl we heard rim crunch. we both looked and said "TIRE". went the rest of the day no leaks. no ****ing way on any other tire.

Another thing I didn't think about is running the Liners that the CORR guys run. It's like a small tire inside of a tire. Sorta like Dragonbdy. You can find them on some of the BAJA forums. That setup would be sick. Wyatt call Victor up and tell him to hook you up. I was trying to talk you up to him in Jellico. I know he will be at KOH and he said he would give all the help he could to anyone sporting BFG tires, even if they were just regular mud terrains.

Cole thank you for the good words. I need to get on the horn and talk to Victor. I regret not making it to Jellico. I think this deal could have been sealed up. We'll see......I'd love to run the KRTS in KOH even in a 37" format. Hell that just means I have a ton of 39" spares, and a second set of rims. (sounds like I'm collecting for a 2nd buggy build huh?)

You don't have to run 37's, I was looking at about 40 39" KRTs in the warehouse today and we are still building away. I believe we have to build around 200 which means maybe 125 will be good tires.

I feel that if you have a good set of tires and a mounted spare you will be fine for the race. I am not going to get worked up about a special desert tire for one race., although after talking to Victor I am sure I could at least buy a set for the race. I have 5 reds and will soon have 5 we's also. I will take my chances with what I have as they have seemed to work OK for me and several of the top 10 finished on this same tire last year. I personally feel like the KRT's are too wide and just plain damn ugly. To each their own though.

You still need the reds out there for the trailriding and prerunning. I woudl practice some on the KRT's, but just riding around slow and marking waypoints and crawling the trails, I would have the stickies on the buggy. YOu will be driving the trail on the easiest lines and faster than normal on race day. No reason to do that when practicing and prerunning IMO

Cole, whole different situation. My wife drives a MBZ AMG 430, we put Hankooks on it, and around the 12,000 mile mark, the rears were entirely gone. We are talking belts all the way through on both rears, but the fronts looked new. They are Z rated 245 45 zr 18's on the rears and not sure of the size on the front other than they are a smaller size. We replaced the rears, but now unfortunatley have sliced a front tire and now need to replace one of them. My question is, can I run a set of fronts different from the rears, like BFG's on the front and Hankooks on the rear and then replace all 4 at a different time? What will this do for handling, and will it track differently and hurt the alignment? I appreciate any help you or anyone else can give me. thumb.gif

GF's car: Chrysler 300 front wheel drive

Sliced a front on it, now it has hankooks on the front and michelins on the back. Just got back from a 500 mile road trip, tracked straight and rode nice. I think it handles better now as the Michelins are better tires and there are more of them on the car now. laughing1 There are certainly quieter than having hankooks all the way around.

Man I would think it would be ok to put bfgs on the front a hankooks on the rear, but I am not 100% sure. I would think as long as they are the right size you shouldn't have any problems.

Thanks, I am going to get away from the ZR rated tires as they are so soft, with that heavy car they just ate them up. Gonna give it some different tread on the front and run the rears until they drop. Which shouldn't be too long and then change all of them out. What's a good tire for that car? Not going with Hankooks again. :dunno:

I have sold alot of Hankooks for the little speedy cars and the high end ones, as well as hondas and what not. They are the best import tire for the money I think. I am running their A/ts on my truck and they have been good. Alignment is key and air pressure with the foreign cars, otherwise they wont last long. As long as the benz is not a 4 matic (awd) then you are good to go thumb.gif Your alignment will not change as long as you run the same size on the front that you have been.
