good use of some old lugnuts to weld into the tube.

Is it just me or does your link mounts seem a centimeter or so to the right?

I'm by no means a fabby or welder, just something I spotted and figured i'd ask.

they are centered to the axel not the bridge i mounted to the diff if that makes sence. the bridge is just a piece of metal that fit with little grinding so i used it.:redneck:

Yah makes sense now.

How did you preheat the diff to 500 when you used nickle rods ?

used a kerosene jet furnace heater, one of those tube thingys. it took about five gallons of fuel for the entire process including rework. thats cause i had to do it twice.:redneck:
 
Welded with 7018 preheated to 500 degrees, not enough penetration.

ground down and reheated to 300 degrees and welded up with nirod.

and the pound of sticks cost you more than the axle right?

I read your build a couple days ago. Very interesting and informative.

it sticks up above the cross bar but not the roof line, i did make it bigger and plan on putting a larger piece of glass into it on purpose, as the original one was only about 12 inches tall. very restrictive vision.

and you know how i work James i look at stuff for a while before i make it permanent.:eeek: i am planning on using the wiper motors from my old boat so i need room for them to mount on the inside also.

the preheat was applied exactly the same both times temperature and cooldown except the second time (the one that counts) the electric strip heater i used for the final cooldown tripped the breaker sometime after i closed the shop for the night.:mad: dont have a clue as to when, the diff was still 200 when i put it into the final slow cooldown and dont know how long. was supposed to be overnight.
 
so the slow cooldown isn't just "let it cool on it's own and don't pee on it?"

the issue is the two dissimilar metals cool at different rates if left to cool on thier own causing cracks.

all the books said oven, heat blankets, or bury it in sand. i did what i could by moving the jet closer and further then an 220 V electric radiant heater.

if it rips off i will then go traditional tube truss, just thought id try something different. twisted customs has had success doing it sorta like this.

real soon i get to do the front:D

wow there is a lot more involved than I thought.

If you guys don't mind letting me come watch you weld sometime, I'd appreciate it. I'll work for knowledge :d

I've done basic Oxy and Arc welds in High School (6 years ago) and I'd like to start learning again.

Good build though.
 
It was me and Hip who welded up the diff perch it was a good learning experiance for both of us thats for sure, glad i had taken some metalurgy classes so for the second go around a brought a few books and we did a bunch of reading before starting, All in all i think it turned out well, nirod never looks pretty (personally seen pros do it and it still looks like crap) but im fairly certain it will hold just fine! And i had a blast welding it for Hip!

yeah i no how you work :awesomework: i do the same thing, think about it, draw it out, build it, stare at it for a few days, change it up, repeate:redneck:

maybe the pic is deceiving it just looks talle then the roof line:eeek: maybe i will come up and critizes a bit:kiss::hi:

and yea i am sure the rear truss will be fine, but i think it would look alot better if you brought some 1/4 from the top corners down to the tubs, and maybe add some 3/16 on the sides with holes/dimples in them:cool:

i hopefully will have a new wheeler in the next few weeks... so i might need to borrow your jeeps spot so i can finish it:fawkdancesmiley:

this thing is gonna be fun... and if im readin this right i think there is a possibility of a wheelin trip in the spring for all of us again. its been along time coming but i think james,you,and me might have running rigs then(hoping crossing fingers).

yeah bill the two big issues i have to deal with to run it are :

Wiring and the axel housings are empty which means im a few thousand dollars away with no plan.:looser:
