• Help Support Hardline Crawlers :

The Build-Up Begins...

Alright asses, lol.

I actually pulled the carpet out of the interior of the cab the other day because I have a leak around the windshield or rain gutter in the wiper/cowl area or something and the carpet wouldnt dry out. Im thinking I might just bed line the interior since the carpet is pretty hammered from a few years worth of wheeling and forget about the carpet.

I also have been evaluating my broken cab mount that I need to repair, and got that pulled apart. Im debating whether I should replace my body lift pucks with new UHMW pucks of the correct diameter as well as new bushings for the cab, or simply remove it all together. At this point, removing it would involve cutting the core support/front body mount fairly substantially, cutting and relocating/replacing the front shock hoops, making a new clutch hard line (I custom made a longer one for the lift), cutting the rear sail panel for the rear bumper. The PO who installed the body lift also welded every single spacer along the bed to the frame rails, so I would have to pull the bed completely off so I could cut and grind those properly. Its a LOT of work for a potentially small benefit.

On the other hand, the bed is finally starting to rust out a decent amount that I feel repairs to it are a losing battle, and the idea of a truggy has crossed my mind. I've also given thought to simply swapping cabs/beds with an Xtra cab short bed then I wouldnt have to repair the cab body mount/rust OR the bed rust...

Since the last update on the winch mount, I also took it off and gave up on bolting it on. Icut it shorter to line up more with the frame and welded it on. I braced the front of the truck with some 1/4" angle steel which was cut and notched to fit over the stock front cross tube on the front and top sides. I welded the ends of the angle on the front face, as well as the top to the top of the frame rails. I also stitch welded it along the front and top edge in front of the radiator. I then welded the original winch mount which I had cut down smaller to the reinforced plate. MUCH stronger now. Still needs the tube work done however.

At this point, my list off the top of my head consists of:

  • Bed line cab
  • Remove/repair body lift
  • Replace clutch
  • Tube work on front bumper
  • Front locker/high pinion diff
  • EFI/Propane setup

My vote is remove the body lift, but that does sound like a lot of work... I personally think there is more to gain from the lowered height that you think. It'll be THAT much less pucker factor on the side hills of liberty and naches... :stirpot:

Can I get some update pics on what you ended up with on your rear shocks? I have the same sky kit I am putting on my 86 4runner and am looking for some ideas with it.

Yeah. Thats exactly why I want to pull it off, just to get it lower and more stable. Not to mention if I want to try and drive this thing to its wheeling destinations, I need it to look as small as possible and attract as little attention as possible, haha. Its going to be a project for sure though. Cutting/grinding all those little spacer brackets off the frame under the bed should be fun if/when I get around to actually doing this.

The hoop is still in the same spot it was in the previous pictures. I just looked and unfortunately I have no updated pictures after it was welded in. The shocks cleared the exhaust though, which I was concerned about earlier. At the axle end of the shocks, I just welded some mounts on the top side of the housing and that was it. Pretty easy really. Next time Im over with the truck if I remember I will try and take some pictures for you of what I ended up with.
