The Build-Up Begins...

Long story here, lol

Its a pickup model, but its actually for a 1990 (found it cheap on CL). If you look close, its a little wider around the bed than the way Ashleys is on her 4Runner. Without them side by side, you cant really tell. I also have a body lift, which worked out pretty well. I only had to drill two holes in the frame rails where it mounts, two lined up already, and the height looks good enough for me to not worry about modifying it for the body lift.

The 4Runner version Ashley has for her 4Runner also fit, it just sat too low. The 4Runner version is multi piece design. The brackets unbolt from the actual bumper so you can install those on the 4Runner, then the bumper installs onto the brackets with 6 bolts (plus the 4 bolts that hold the brackets/bumper to the frame). The truck versions are one piece with 4 bolts that hold them to the frame. The 4Runner brackets fit inside the frame rails, whereas the truck versions go on the outside.

When I talked to the people at Marlin, they basically said there was no way any of their bumpers would fit my longbed, but couldnt tell me why. Since they claimed to not make a longbed bumper, I had originally planned on ordering another 4Runner bumper and building new brackets to make it the right fit and height since they unbolted from the bumper itself rather than being one piece and needing to be cut off like the truck versions. But, then I found this one cheap and figured I could cut it up if I had to and save some money. Turned out I didnt have to.

I assume the only difference longbed to shortbed is the distance from the tailgate to the wheel well (how far it wraps around the side), since the distance from the frame to the back of the body seems to be the same for them all. This is based on the fact the 4Runner bumper fits my longbed, as well as the 90 shortbed version.

Basically, I dont see why if I ordered their bumper for my generation truck as a shortbed, it wouldnt fit like they said it wouldnt. Oh well, I got this one cheap and saved almost $200.

I would move that bumper up. It tucks up nicely....

I am actually adjusting mine far enough up that I am going to have to cut the roll pan, and "clearance" my bed sides. :awesomework:

I am actually adjusting mine up because i am removing the body lift and am being a puss-bag and not cutting out as much material as possible to be a badass truggy wheeler hardcore bed. :awesomework:

fixed it for you :fawkdancesmiley: :redneck:

rigs looking nice TJ, glad you guys stopped by to hinder my progress:fawkdancesmiley: :haha:

no, j/k, good to see you guys:hi:

Dumbass...

Anyway, TJ, if you want, stop by on your way out. I think I am going to try to stop by Aarons tomorrow to offer help that I know he will just refuse because he likes to work alone... I feel so rejected.... :booo:

Id stop by your place Josh, but I never know when youre home or not. Aaron is always home being a slacker or dorking around in the garage, haha.

No pictures yet, but I got the main body of my winch mount made up too. It just needs two more holes for mounting, and some paint for now until I have use of a tube bender to complete the rest. I ran the weekend with it semi mounted up (minus two bolts) "just in case", and it worked great.

Ive also decided Im exchanging my 12" shocks for 14" shocks, so I will get those mounted up once theyre here, and after I get the rear shock hoop from Sky. Most likely that will happen next weekend. In the mean time, I will fully weld the exhaust. Then it will be "done" :awesomework:

It cant move up any higher. The body lift is why I didnt have to trim the roll pan. If (when) I took the body lift off, it would be tighter up against the body and I would have to cut the roll pan. Basically, its the same height as Ashleys, which is where its supposed to be on the body relative to the frame. Its really actually pretty close as it is, and I'm happy with it.

I dropped down off a large rock onto the rear bumper today on accident, glad I had it!

I got a few pictures of the winch mount I built. Nothing too fancy, and a first time attempt and building something like this. Its all 1/4" plate, with the exception of the fairlead mount which is 3/16" angle steel. I think it came out pretty good.

Here was a little "test" I put together for it. I parked the truck on a steep hill, then anchored it to a parked 4Runner.

It worked fine. Pulled the truck right up without tearing the mount off as soon as I got the 4Runner to stop being pulled forward instead, haha. Not surprisingly I had to block all the wheels, parking brake, in gear, etc on the 4Runner.

I think I have a few ideas for some two more braces to the top of the frame instead of all the force being on just that front crossmember, but other than that, I like how it came out. It will be a good base for when I have access to a bender for the rest of the tube to build off of.

Also, I got my rear shock hoop from Sky in today. Nice piece. I cut the ends, made some plates for the frame, and got it clamped in where I think Im going to run it. I need to take some measurements and make sure it will work there, but I like it so far.

The drivers rear shock will be close to the exhaust, but just holding it up it looks like I have about 2" of clearance. I need to double check with it flexed around and such. Luckily the exhaust is still just tack welded in case it needs to change.

Thats about it for now. Still trying to figure out the shock situation. I need to get the measurements for the rear so I know if I need to exchange all four shocks for 14", or just the front two. All in all, a good weekend of wheeling and getting stuff done on the truck :D

Because I like replacing it :flipoff:

I think Im gonna change where the shocks are mounting. After looking at the measurements, I only have 4" of uptravel with the mount where its at. Thats not enough, and I have more than enough droop.

So, I think Im going to go outside the box like lilyota did on page 4 like this.

Putting the mount behind the rear axle with the mounts facing forward. This will make the shocks lean back and create more distance between the mounting points to gain more travel. I cant move it forward because of the gas tank, and I figure the rear axle swings in an arc to the back on compression anyway, so they might be a little more efficient that way. Who knows, haha.

Looks good! do you still need a blue gas door? call me. :D
Yeah, I do. Im busy driving back and forth from Ft Lewis and Woodinville, its hard to find a moment to go out of the way to come get it though.
Bout damn time you got that winch mounted slacker. :flipoff:

Looks good though. :awesomework:
Yeah yeah. Did you get both of yours mounted before me? Have you used yours yet? I was really impressed with how quick it pulled. The line speeds are higher than the Warn M8000 on paper, and it proved it well enough to me :awesomework:

As for tonight, nothing happened with this truck. I did however start putting the engine together for the other 4Runner (the anchor in the winch pics). Its getting a swap from a 3.0 to 22RE. The short block is basically put together now, along with the head. Ashley did most of the work too, I just supervised :D

EDIT: Also, my new 14" shocks will be here Thursday, so if all goes well, I will have all the shocks mounted by the weekend.

Yep had them both mounted the friday after I bought them, and tested them both out up at Elbe that weekend. They work well, you'll be happy with yours.

Sorry for the high jack. Carry on.

I'll be the first to recomend you do some more work to that winch mount. You used the factory bumper mounts and those have been known to rip out real easily.... One GOOD pull nad that winch will go flying I'll guarantee it.

Other than that looks good enough to wheel.

Yup. Im working on it. Like I said in the post, I plan to add some more supports to it that run back to the frame rails, Im just trying to work out how, haha.

I'd also look into reenforcing the front cross member. They aren't the greatest for holding up in stock form. Seen a few crack out from the frame even without a winch.

Haha, EFI swap... I havent even gotten the shocks mounted yet, and thats basically the last thing on the list for now :looser:

Got your text by the way, I just forgot to reply since I was busy when I got it, sorry.
