Van Epps pass

You know the best way to stop the closures? Donate your time to the Forrest Service. Get involved in their jobs, how do you think the tree huggers are so strong, they are the ones running the show! Back in the 60-70's they got college educations and took over the Forrest service. Their generations are still running it , and no one from any other form of recreation has stepped up to slow them down. Think about it!

I have given this plenty of thought. This ideology is fundamentally flawed before it leaves the ground for one inescapable truth. Being an "educated" Tree Commi does not grant you the power to oppress other people's rights, liberties and freedoms. If I were to earn a bachelors degree in Marine Biology I still am not entitled to criminalize the consumption of fresh water by human beings. It is one thing to receive a monetary handout from our tax pool to tromp around in the bush pretending a degree in forestry is relevant to modern society. It is another entirely to oppress the freedoms of one's neighbors on an attempt to justify your existence.

It is one thing to make one's way honestly in the private sector creating and genuinely benefiting American society. Indeed it is another to earn as a social worker when one does not have the necessities to accel in the free market. It is a despicable thing to "earn" as a socialist who takes from the wealth of society and turns those resources against the very people who provided said wealth pool to begin with.

Bottom line is WE DO have the right to use trust land for everything from hiking to rock crawling. There is plenty of it for all of us to use and never even have to see one another. So long as our "damage" does not equal or greater that of an open pit mine (across from Reiter's first parking lot), a typical FS or DNR logging contract or even the average sized land slide common after a good rain, they have no right in an alleged Land Of The Free to tell us otherwise. The absolute nastiest "damaged" trails we have do not hold one onehundreth of a candle to the effect of one completed DNR logging contract.

The Forest Service has an agenda and it is not an American one. I will not betray this nation by helping it.

Before, I had thought and said to myself "slow yo roll, son"....."you're going overboard". But then then you post a mein kampf. :haha:

You all are some very interesting folks.:awesomework: You picked a political side and are sticking to it......no matter the cost. I hope it's worth it in the end.

Goodluck and have fun on your Van Epps trip Jeepasaurusrex. And while these guys joined in on the drama here, I wouldn't expect them to join you on the trip. They are far too busy typing paranoid and disgruntled posts for themselves to read to each other.

I think you missed the point of Wrongway's post.

To paraphrase: Forest Service was populated by tree huggers in the 70's and 80's and continues to be populated by similar folks. They control the FS, so things swing to their agenda be it good or bad, noble or exlusionary. If they are anti-ORV then they will continue to be anti-ORV since the rest of their "organization" agrees and supports that stance.

In order to CHANGE that direction. Pro-ORV / mixed use or equality-minded people need to join the FS (or DNR or insert agency here) and change it from the inside. Slow process, but probably about the only way it will happen. Same with politics.

Anyone know about parking there? Is there a good place to park a tow rig?

There is a "big rock slab" and parking area on the West side of the main road in. It's many, many miles on the gravel road and a few miles before the east turn to get to Van Epps Pass.

I feel that would be a reasonable spot to park the truck and trailer and for the towed street legal rig to be driven from; a central base camp for the greater area.

Or just park at the end of the paved road by the bridge.(Salmon La Sac Rd):awesomework: You will need a pass, I think.

Yes, There is good parking and plenty of dispersed camping. Much of the dispersed camping near the trailhead is riverside. Not such a good road for a tow rig. If you choose and have a licensed 4x4 you can park near Salmon-La-Sac or Cayuse Horse camp. I think the trailhead is 7 miles from those areas.

Camping anywhere along the trail or at the lake works well. We go to either the lake or the pass in mid august for the meteor showers. August also has some great Blue/Huckle Berry picking. High Buck hunting areas are accessable from Van Epps Pass.

Im looking for an area that would be a good base camp.

Also further below Salmon La Sac you can camp in the Lake Cle Elum lakebed at an area known as Dry Creek. Numerous other ares can be camped at from the end of the lake up towards Salmon La Sac.

P.S. I've been up there gold panning too. :awesomework: There's stuff there. As Murkman said, there are numerous spots to camp at and explore.

These guys want to keep the area a secret.....because it is worth keeping a secret. Or better yet, it worth our attention. Just remember, the area is patrolled (USFS). And...folks live on/off the main gravel road. Respect that.

I have a buddy who has a place about half way up(mineral claim) and he hates nothing more than asshats in the area making problems.

No sir, I don't believe I did. My point stands at joining a government agency does not give you right to assault the rights of others. They can study trees all they want but they do not have the right to take freedoms from people. I'll not quit my job and go to school so I can begin a "career" scraping by on a 50K a year handout. I will keep my far more lucrative job and instead remind our representatives in DC that while they scrounge around in a panic looming for things to cut and fiscal cliffs to avoid, that there is a whole branch of big intrusive government they can do away with entirely. A government agency that is consuming our tax dollars while providing nothing beneficial to decent society.

If a racist man becomes a cop and immediately goes around arresting people for having what he might refer to as "incorrect skin color", do you...

A) Call the police department, followed by Internal Affairs and even the local media and put a stop to what is clearly wrong? Or....

B) You quit your job to become a cop yourself. Then you are simply, well, not racist in hopes that maybe you'll set a nice example for the other guy. Maybe follow the racist cop around with your trembles and light tenor voice saying "oh, stop it. Please?"

I chose option A. If you are going to join the FS to try and change it from the inside, you might as well go join the North Korean army so as to try to convince them not to start a ****ing war.

Fixed.

And no Van Epps pass for me this weekend. In the last four weeks I've spent two full weekends camping and wheeling and one day trip the Saturday before last on the Busy. I wheel more than some people who do it for a living. So I'll be taking this weekend off for maintenance and maybe a single all nighter at Evans Saturday. Next weekend I'll either be back at Elbe or I may be in Oregon desert racing. I'm not even sure. All I know is what I said at the onset, I've found what I love to do. I will fight for it. I will not tread water with the rest of them.
