They are still racing against the clock, so if he was to run just as fast without any impedements as the first guy across the line then it will be a clock race, not first across the line.
That said, the area they are starting in is full of Cresote trees and has a thousand roads that criss-cross. All of this desert is rough as ****.
A local that knows the area well will know which roads to hit in certain sections that are fast. Randy took me out to Outer Limits the way he and JR went last year and 75% of the trail was smooth as glass.
On the way back, he was driving Carl's rig and I missed the trail he was on and I could not get over 25 mph and I was within 50 yards of the ravine he took me out on going 65-70 mph. Knowledge of THAT desert is key.
The desert race guys are used to driving vehicles that would laugh at this area at 100 mph, but they are in borrowed rigs that do not have the ability to drive that fast. Also, Campbell is reportedly having issues with the air shocks on his rig. I think they will let him down if he tries to pull 100 mph in that terrain.
