Re: Ok, so I dont need one, but.....

Well, if it means anything I'm far dumber than you. I actually thought to myself, "Ok, it's not a great daily driver but a 23 year old 4x4 military ambulance would be so cool."

Re: Ok, so I dont need one, but.....

It's on the Southern Jeeps board........check the 2nd page of "Non-Jeep Items For Sale"

He's got more pics and info. I love it...I'd like to make it the "Dirty Thirty" team truck!

Re: Ok, so I dont need one, but.....

haha....that guy is in our club here in Jax...damn nice truck, but I HATE the CUCVs.....they are so damn loud. I couldnt DD it.

Yep, that was the one. I did some research and found that the motor in it is weaker than the motor in my taco. When you consider that it's probably pretty tired because it's 23 years old it just gets worse. Add to the fact that it has 4.56 gears, no overdrive, and a three speed (wide spaced gears with that crappy motor) and it seems like it's just not a rig built for the highway. Now I'm wondering if a 4x4 conversion van would be the way to go.

In all seriousness, my wife doesn't seem to be onboard with the new DD thing (we bought hers a few months ago) so it's probably not going to happen. But I do kind of enjoy looking and I might just pull the trigger if the right rig comes by.

Re: Ok, so I dont need one, but.....

you are right about those truck not being made for the highway. they SCREAM at highway speed. if you could replace that motor with Cummins and an allison trans...that woudl be a sweet tow rig/camper. the back will already have some sort of AC unit, or should.

good luck finding the right rig, I looked and looked then ended up settling for a 2500 Avalanche w/ the 8.1L. it will pull a house, but the fuel mileage isnt that good...LOL

Re: Ok, so I dont need one, but.....

We had those CUCV diesels when i was in the military. Blazers and 3/4 ton trucks. They are the 6.2 shitty non-turbo motors with th400s and 4.56s....

I had to drive one from Bremerhaven to Northern Italy once. 50mph on the Autobahn for 3 days is not only horrible, but dangerous!

The first military Humvees had that motor too. Horrid.

Ever seen Dibbles Ambulance tow rig? That thing is killer. Pirate has some pics of it.....

I have and at any given time there are half a dozen of them on ebay. My problem is that I really think 4x4 is useful when you tow to the places that we tow. I'm thinking about the places I wheel.

* I have a place locally that's nearly a 1/2 mile trail ride to the parking spot.
* Tellico trail 1 has this twisty section that can require a back up and I don't see doing it in 2wd. Other than that it's probably ok.
* Harlan is mostly ok with 2wd but even wet grass can be a problem sometimes. When I stayed at the cabins I needed 4wd to back it out of the spot next to it.
* Windrock was muddy and I actually got stuck one night in 4wd. It was late and when I woke it I managed to drive out of it.
* Crozet would be fine with 2wd except for that time I destroyed my oil pan and had to recover the rig in the woods with my trailer.
* Rausch Creek normally wouldn't require 4x4 but the weekend I was there the temp was 1 degree and it the entire area was coated solid with ice.
* Gray Rock wouldn't normally require 4x4 except that I left at night, made a wrong turn on the way out, and ended up going down a trail by the picnic tables and I needed 4wd to back out.
* Devil's Playground doesn't really need 4wd unless you're going in to recover your rig.

It just seems like 4wd comes in handy so often that I'd regret not having it. For most of these situations the lack of 4wd can be worked around or prevented (if you're brighter than me I suppose) but like I said, I think I'd regret going with a 2wd tow rig.

*Hijack* What do you guys think? Are you glad you have 4wd? Do you regret not having it?

Re: Ok, so I dont need one, but.....

Every dope at the horse ride this weekend with a 2wd had to get pulled out of the field with a tractor :)

Re: Ok, so I dont need one, but.....

You know GM is in the process of buying out Dodge. Probably end up being a Chevy diesel with a Cummings and D60's front and rear. Dad runs the Chevy store in Jasper so I'll let you know when i hear more.
