Re: Does anybody know anything about tuning air shocks?

I got those steps rock midget. My guestion was can you charge the shocks off the vehicle or do they need to be mounted up with the weight off? I don't have my own tank or regulators so this step would be important

Re: Does anybody know anything about tuning air shocks?

Matt I got a tank and reg. if you need to use it. Although I'm not that close to ya! We always charge them fully extended.

Re: Does anybody know anything about tuning air shocks?

if you got a cherry picker, fully extend, take them off with charge in them, take them where you're gonna tune them, check press, measure oil, put more oil in, recharge with 20# more (you can bleed it) adn put back on all while the rig is in the air on the cherry picker and jack stands.

Man thanks for the offer, I may take you up on it. If anybody heads this way from Ttown or vice versa let a brother know.

Re: Does anybody know anything about tuning air shocks?

10-4 Kaiser.

Checked the valving and it is 50/90 which is in line with the norm, so that should be fine.

Re: Does anybody know anything about tuning air shocks?

MATT I HAVE A GUAGE AND FILLER FROM POLYPERFORMANCE IF U NEED IT I CAN OVERNIGHT IT TO U THIS IS THE LINK NO LEAKAGE WITH THIS BABY 2 SHUT OFF VALVES...http://www.polyperformance.com/shop/Nitrogen-Fill-Adapter-p-286.html

Re: Does anybody know anything about tuning air shocks?

You need to pull the shocks to fool with the shock oil.

When reinstalling, make sure you can get 100% extension because these thing are next to impossible to compress by hand.

Re: Does anybody know anything about tuning air shocks?

You can leave them on your rig you'll just need to tip it over to remove the oil.

Re: Does anybody know anything about tuning air shocks?

I do all the work while the shocks are on the rig. I don't actually measure the amount that currently in the shock but I carefully measure the amount I add. If the sides aren't equal I'll add 5cc more to one side than another. If you charge them on the bench it's going to be tricky to reinstall them. No reasonable human can compress charged air shocks and even if they could lining up the bolt, misalignment spaces, lock washer, etc. would be a nightmare. Finally, it's probably going to take 4-10 tries to get it. You really want to have the nitrogen at the buggy.

Here are my steps.
1) Raise rig and confirm full extension with tape measure
2) Using deflator slowly remove nitrogen
3) Pull valve core and add 10 cc or oil (more if you think you're way off, 15/10 if they are unequal, etc.)
4) Install valve core and charge shock
5) Using suck down winch see how hard it is to compress the shocks. It should be difficult but possible to get full compression.
6) Go back to step 1 if you're not happy (it may take a bunch of tries)
7) Leave which sucked in for 5 minutes or so. This should give you a reasonable guess at your ride height.
8 ) Wheel it to test it.

BTW, when you first charge them and lower the rig gracefully with the cherry picker/hi-lift it's going to sit a *lot* higher than it will after you first trip. Even a quick suck down and release will remove 2-3" from the ride height. Step 7 above will help figure out the real ride height but don't get to thinking you're way off if you have 8" of extension after gently lowering it.

(I'm not sure I've said anything new here. I'm a soon to be banned post padder :) )

Re: Does anybody know anything about tuning air shocks?

Matt I have a setup like Vanguard you can use. If you need it let me know and I will get it to you.

Re: Does anybody know anything about tuning air shocks?

I like your style Brad! Thanks for all the info guys. I am going to try and add oil this weekend/next week. The only thing holding me up is the lack of a CO2 tank and regs. If anybody has one local that I can borrow for a few days I would be beyond thankful. Daniel, I may be coming to Ttown this weekend if your offer still stands.....

Edit cause I just saw JeepCJ's post. You are totally awesome dude! Just send me a PM or email about a convenient time to meet you and I will be there. Thanks.

Re: Does anybody know anything about tuning air shocks?

i just went to airshocks, and getting a regulator setup is cheap... i bought a 0-500psi regulator for $60 the hose from parker store for another $15 and i had a tank, but im sure they are resonable from your welding supply store.... i think i paid $200 for mine... and its a medium size tank...

in my opinion, its worth owning...

Re: Does anybody know anything about tuning air shocks?

Yeah that is a lot cheaper than the poly kit, I will look into a setup of my own once I get a few more things taken care of

That's probably just a typo but you need nitrogen, not CO2. CO2 turns into a liquid when you compress it so you don't want it in your shocks.
