Seat is actually better than the DR and the kick is not bad either. Took 2 kicks to get her goin when I got her home and she fires on the first when its warmed up.

Its rides way better offroad than the DR and handles better. Even with the rear shock adjusted way down its better.

Re: Dual Sport Trip - Spring 2010

I've gotten use to the seat, its aight for me. Hell with the lil tank you gotta stop frequently enough as it is. I froze my ass off last night leaving work, I need some more gear ! :****:

Re: Dual Sport Trip - Spring 2010

OK...........I'm am going to ride a 2008 XR650L tomorrow. It has 3200 miles on it and can be bought for $3500-$3700. I also found a 2008 KLR650 with 234 miles on it. It can be bought for $3500. Both are completely stock.

Decisions, decisions................................

Re: Dual Sport Trip - Spring 2010

I went for a test ride on the xrl today. It is a nice bike but I dont think it's for me. I rode about 15 miles on the blacktop then found an open field that I played in. Playing in the field was fun but I didn't like the highway riding at all. This maybe something that I can get used to but I am used to riding my big cruiser on the highway and I am probably pretty spoiled.

Anyway, I ride back home and start watching the LSU - Bama game. About that time my wife tells me someone is pulling in the driveway. I go outside and see my brother-in-law and one of his friends. They are pulling a motorcycle trailer with my BIL's YZ450FT on it. They get out and exchange pleasantry's and then ask me if I want the bike. He bought this bike new in 2005 and has probably put less than 10 hours on it. He bought it not really knowing what it was and doesnt like riding it because it has too much power. He tried to sell it but never had any luck with that. I told him I didnt really want him to give me the bike but he was welcome to leave it here and I would ride it. He told me to do whatever I wanted with it, as he is tired of looking at it. I unloaded it and tried to crank it but it wouldnt fire. When I opened the gas tank, the gas smelled very stale. He hasnt cranked the bike in about 6 months and that fuel has probably been in there for a year or two. I drained the tank and carb and replaced with fresh gas, but still will not fire.

1) Any ideas about why its not firing, before I take it to the shop?

2) Is there any chance of this being a good trail bike or dual sport if I put a headlight and blinkers on it?

3) Anything else I need to know about this bike?

Re: Dual Sport Trip - Spring 2010

First off I know how you feel about the comfort thing. I ride a Road King for my street bike and the comfort is great on it.

Second I would probably pull the carb instead of just drain it. Mite even get by with pooring some sea foam through the tank and carb. Kick it over a few times with kill swicth off and drain the carb agian .

Don't know much about them bikes, but for the price I would make it work.

Re: Dual Sport Trip - Spring 2010

This trip sounds like more fun than any I've read about in a while, have fun!

Re: Dual Sport Trip - Spring 2010

First off.. Dual sports SUCK on long blacktop...

Why do you think the avid dual sport rider tries his absolute hardest to link routes with as much gravel/offroad as possible..

Its the fact that its street legal to ride into town or his forest service type roads where ohv's are prohinited that makes them appealing..
If your looking for a pavement pounder, dual sporting is not for you...

BTW, whats the goin price for that yz??? booyang

Re: Dual Sport Trip - Spring 2010

I love riding mine on pavement... Im sure I'll enjoy it 10X more with the sumo setup, damn I cant wait they get here ! :woot:

Re: Dual Sport Trip - Spring 2010

To bad we didnt catch a stop light.. I was going to let er eat on one wheel for you ! :woot:

Re: Dual Sport Trip - Spring 2010

I ride mine a lot on pavement and always have. The KTM sucked, KLR was awesome, Husky is very impressive thus far with a 6th gear and very little vibes.

Dave if you can title a bike like that, and like riding it and the price I imagine is right, I say go for it! Maintenance might be greater on the smaller cc bikes, but I am sure it's simple to work on.

I know its not a road queen and thats not what I'm looking for (I already have one of those). I think it was just the honda package. Sitting on the YZ or the KLR is a completely different feel and I think I would enjoy riding them.

I have no idea what the YZ is worth.

I think it can be titled in MS. I'll find out for sure though before I go much further. If it can, I'll ride it and make sure it will work before spending the money to DS it.

ergonomics on the honda are less than desirable stock.. But its all in the Bars...
Forgot about changing mine since its been so long ago.. The stock bars swoop back and are so low it makes stand up riding impossible and it feels like your steering out of your pockets..
A set of CR High bend renthals will make the biggest difference in the world.. Tons of threads discussing this bar on thumpertalk and advrider.

taller riders have also had success in lowering the pegs a little as well..

Other bikes may be a bit more comfortabel on the slab, but i'd have to say off road performance and maintenence/dependability you can't beat a honda... maybe im just biased tho... :drinkers:
