Fords PSD vs Dodes Cummins..

Good to see some facts for comparison. I'll add the 7.3 stroke is 106.172 mm.
This however has nothing to do with the argument that inline 6's are better than V8's because the 6 has a longer stroke because it's not always the case.
How do you define better?

The I6 will produce its torque at a lower RPM, so perhaps it's a better engine for hauling.
 
I'm not after anything other than reasons why people are loyal to one engine or the other backed up with facts. Yes I do believe it's mostly due to it being the cool thing to do.
If you have more FACTS to add we would all like to hear them.:cool:

what is a FACT to you? I know STATS, you may not consider those facts. I am guessing you're an engineer? real life doesn't agree with a calculated guess on paper, so real life isn't true?

On all Forums I have been on (for the last 10 years), and all of the diesel shops I visit on a regular basis. The powerstroke has more failures with injectors, cylinder preheating (glow plugs), turbos, head gaskets, exhaust leaks, hydro-locking, weaker rods = windowing blocks. IPR? problems

The Cummins has had block cracking issues. Fuel delivery problems (VP44 and lift pump), and the dowel pin.

:cool: Cummins even has it listed as two different 6.7 engines, I would sure like to know the difference besides the hp.

Well his first reply was that it will work. I asked again to make sure about the cab and chassis part. I can set you up with the Smarty and exhaust if it does in fact work for your truck :awesomework:
 
well I will say that just recently I was in the market for a new tow truck and I seriously considered a dodge and a ford. I was looking at ford between 1999 and 2002 with a 7.3l powerstroke and a dodge 98 and newer. Really what it came down to was I wanted a stick and not an auto and ford didnt make very many of them and dodge did, so in the end I was able to find a 2000 doge 2500 5 speed 4x4 long bed quad cab with 90k miles.

Um no. Torque does nothing for helping you tow. In a nutshell the RPM where your engine makes peak torque is the RPM where it's under the most stress. In reality making more horse power with less torque alows you to use lighter/ not as strong components.
The whole torque vs horse power topic gets deep and could be a thread of it's own.

I have a very simillar story about why I bought the truck I did but it's off topic for this thread. We hear it all of the time, "My Dodge, My Dodge, My Dodge!!!" and when these people are asked "why Dodge" 99% of the time the answer is "My Dodge has a Cummins". So what it boils down to is these people are buying the truck just for the engine. This is the thread that asks "why the Cummins".
 
Stats are facts but you havent provided any yet.

alright fine, no one here can state facts that you will agree with, so they are not facts. I get it now, this thread is worthless to you I suppose. At least other people will be able to see the FACTS listed, and make their own decisions.
 
Thanks for staring this thread as a spin off of mine. It helps with all the input from others and info about the PSD and Cummins. I think after reading this a couple times im going with the 7.3 powerstroke or a 03+ cummins.:awesomework:
 
The rig I've been towing with for the last 5 years is my dads '01 dually dodge. Last I drove it it had 394k on it with no major issues at all. The trans went away once but that was a seal issue nothing to do with the engine. I'd wager that 300k of those miles has had a trailer behind it. Anything from a 19' car trailer with my yota on it to a 35' 5th wheel.

My friends dad bought a 96 F250 and last I heard it was getting close to 380k and it gets the **** kicked out of it.. They bought it to work on the farm and boy does it ever. Not a straight panel on it and it gets maintnance only when someone thinks of it or it breaks down. :haha:


I just picked up a 89 IDI ferd F350 4x with a 5 speed. No turbo for me but I fully expect it to last another 126k before I have an issue. You kids can keep your electronic crap. :redneck:

Here's a post I made in this thread which expains it prety well I think. Feel free to post up there and expain to me where I was in error. It's off topic for this thread.

The relationship is simple.
HP=(torque*RPM)/5252
In a nutshell torque is a twisting force NOT a twisting motion. Torque doesn't move though you can measure it on something while it's moving. When torque is applied to something and the twisting force becomes a motion and that thing moves it now can be measured in RPM. As you can see above if there are RPM's then it's HP.....
HP moves things while torque doesn't.
(Horse) power of a tow rig is just one attribute. How it tows overall is a combination of lots of things.

So far you haven't backed anything up. You've just disagreed with everybody and bitched about people not showing proof. I've driven a **** load of trucks of all sizes. Gas, diesel, manual, auto, Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Kenworth, Freightliner, Intl', Peterbilt, Jimmy, Cat, Cummins, Detroit, Isuzu, Hino. I don't need you to back it up I live in the real word and go on real world experience.
I'm a heavy equip mechanic and our company has 9 PSD's and to say we have had issues is an understatement. If you need me to scan in the multitude of workorders inhouse and warranty I can just as proof there are serious reliability concerns. I also bought a '03 Dmax new and drive it everyday. I tow pretty often and have only been to the dealer twice in over 7yrs.

I've thought about swapping in a common rail. But the more I look into it, and see just whats going on. I just can't beat the motor that my truck came with. I love simplicity :redneck:

Not that tough to understand Jeff. I asked why anyone favors one over the other. Anyone can have a personal preference which is never wrong but you said there is more to it than personal preference. Here's your big chance to explain why.....I really would like to hear it as my truck is getting older and I may want to buy a new one one day. I already know what truck is best so this thread is about the engines specifically.
Seems you have trouble telling your side with anything to back it up. If the answers are "everywhere" then it should be easy for you to find them.:corn:
