• Help Support Hardline Crawlers :

I think it's time to talk about the forum

I hadn't seen any progress from godaddy on the upgrade/migration to the new server so I checked in with them this morning. The 72 hour migration has turned into 7-10 days but they are "working on it." I rattled them a little so hopefully they'll fast track it.

hopefully they will get on it soon. I tried to post something for sale this morning from tapatalk, chrome & IE, it timed out on all three, from my phone and laptop :dunno:

You must've removed my admin rights, which is fine. Ricky gave them to me the last time we lost email notifications and MattO and I eventually got it fixed with a bandaid but I knew it would not last long with GoDaddy. Drop them like a bad habit. They are great for static websites, but not this. There are MUCH better hosting options, that care about their customers. GoDaddy is way too big to care.
I was John's IT consultant for ideas. I never had admin rights with him, he would just call me nearly every day to get advice. I can not STAND being a web admin. I refuse to do it, so more power and much love to anyone willing to be it. Like Woody on IH8MUD, see, he OWNS the site, and it's the worlds largest privately held forum. It's how he lives in SW Utah now. But... and no offense to the OG's... but there is zero way this site can run smoothly by committee, just look at Congress. Like anything, it's needs a single executive to call the shots and be willing to keep EVERYTHING up. It's why IH8MUD simply works and folks use it.
John knew this site needed upgrading to the 2.X SMF versions, we had a dozen long convos about it. But even HE was not willing to do anything about that without the blessings of the original club. He had always hinted to me the things he was trying to do and falling on def ears, so it was kind of surreal to SEE the threads where he would pose a question, the same question that he would tell me about, but no one would respond to him, on SO MANY threads. Having had previous conversations long before his cancer about these things, and to have lost him, then that door being opened up and visualize the wall that he encountered because he simply WOULD NOT move on anything without the blessing of the HL OG's.... It literally broke me down to tears thumbing through some of those empty threads. Damn it I miss that dude. We all do.
Do work. Just do it. Like you say, if you don't, the site will not exist this time next year. So fix it. Everything must change or it dies.

Good post man. I didn't remove your admin rights though. I've tried to stay in my lane, just working on IT matters where I think I can help.

I agree with you that Godaddy sucks balls. We're kind of locked in with them for now. I've been eyeballing that vbulletin cloud option though. I feel like that's a pretty good solution for a website that is 100% forum related.

I agree, I don't know of why your admin right's were removed and did not know. You and I have spoken in length about updating the site, but haven't been able to afford it or had the IT means to do it. When John G left, it was all I could do to pick it up and keep it running. Hopefully we can get this all behind us now that we have Andrew on the hunt...lol... :dblthumb:

Ricky is who randomly gave me admin rights a while back when I pointed out that the email notification was FUBAR'd. He musta pulled them back recently because so many people like talking to me more when they think I'm RickyB... I giv'em hope instead of hand jobs. #WannaB #iKid #JustJokes

Lemme know what I can do to help. If a round-table discussion needs to take place, maybe we can have a conference call or something. Over the years, I can tell you what and how John operated. I'm sure ya'll know cause the writings on the wall.... but it became obvious what he had said all those years once I saw it with my own eyes.

Well we are officially back to square 1. Eric was right about Go Daddy. They are a huge steaming pile of ****. I wasted a bunch of hours dealing with those incompetent **** heads and literally got no where. Pretty sure every "tech" they have is foreign and they use boilerplate responses that you can tell are coming straight from the help manual. The server upgrade has been scrapped because they could not migrate the site correctly. That is why we've been down the last couple days. What should have been a pretty simple copy, export database, import database they managed to turn into a huge cluster.

So, we are currently sitting on a two year renewal of the current server. You would think that moving from server A to server B would be a relatively simple process and they managed to **** that up. Then their "elevated techs" could not figure out why and their solution was to cancel the upgrade and go back to the old server, which I was initially told was being phased out. Wow. I'm not dealing with those assholes for another second. Huge waste of time. I knew Go Daddy was a budget host but I never thought they'd be this bad. I'm going to explore other options.

First off and foremost, thank you a million times over for doing this Andrew, secondly, is their another hosting site that would be a better suit for us that actually has English speaking tech support? I realize we did renew our 2 year contract with them, but who would you choose if you could? Just curious what other options are available. :dunno:

Yeah thanks for taking the time to do all this work. I have been having to do minimal IT work here (don't like it at all) at my job and let me tell you I know I don't want any part of what you're doing being that I can't begin to think of server work... Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thanks guys but I haven't really accomplished anything yet. Picking a host is kind of like walking through a mine field. There are so many bootleg shitty hosts out there but they all "look" good until you actually sign the contract then it usually goes down hill once you have your first problem. We use MediaTemple here at my work and they're awesome but expensive. I'm going to look at options though. At least for the time being the site is up and running.

Once again thank you, and sorry its become such a time killer for you. That isnt what any of us wanted but , you stepped up to the plate and your time and effort is appreciated greatly !

Re:

Andrew, any idea about the persisting issues with (some) people not being able to log into the forum via Tapatalk? Tapatalk tech has apparently told some it is a result of an outdated site plug-in here.

Now no pics posted through Tapatalk shows up on the forum. Not sure whether that is a forum or Tapatalk issue. Seems like someone stated it was happening on other forums through Tapatalk the same, so that one may not be on us?

I don't use tapatalk but I just deleted the plugin completely and reinstalled the latest version. Can someone run some tests and let me know if it is functioning?

What should have been about a 30 minute start to finish deal took about 2 hours because the Go Daddy FTP was completely ****ed. I finally got everything reset and it's working now. There is a different password on the FTP now so if anyone needs it PM me.

It wouldn't let me reply on tapatalk, with or without a picture.... but then again, I couldn't reply on chrome either using mobile :wtflol:

no luck from work computer on chrome or edge.... trying IE now

still no luck with IE trying to attach a Screenshot of errors

test...from chrome

I set it up originally, so it is probably under my login which of course I have no clue what it is. Can you send me link and I will attempt to login or reset my account?

I'm still having issues for some reason. Every device and application that I have tried all have strange issues.

I can't edit a post, can't reply with a quote, and sometimes I can't even reply at all..

using tapatalk or chrome it will allow me to submit a short reply no problem.... anything over 10 words or so and it times out... using Microsoft Edge at work is the only thing that works consistently and that is only 80% of the time....

so, all that griping to ask, has there been any progress on improvements?
thanks!
