Re: the aftermath....

I didn't take any pics, was to bussy fixing break. All in all I had a blast and can't wait to go to another race. Nice meeting everyone and glad I can put a face with a name, even though I don't remeber half your names. That is why we have to ride again. thumb.gif

Don't know if I will make another race. Maybe the finals. Just so happened that dad was out of town and I could use his truck.

Re: the aftermath....

I had great weekend. I had fun watching the event and running on sunday. I have to say thanks to Joel for riddin shot gun for me. We really clicked better than I would have thought. The course was fun and it is a rush to run. It was good to see a lot of people that I haven't seen in a while and meet some new ones. XRRA is a friggin blast. I didn't like running in Bobs buggy because it was in the back of my mind the whole time no to kill it and I felt bad for him having to get a tire changed because of me. Trial riding has never bothered me that bad. I guess it is some good incentive to get mine built. Good to see every one and I had a good time.

Re: the aftermath....

After looking at all the pics and seeing the vids so far, it looks like it was a great event and I can only imagine how fun it was. I wonder if Louis remembered to pick up my shirt and coozies... :eat:

I hope they are scheduled to come back next year, I will definitely be there thumb.gif

Re: the aftermath....

Cole just got this loaded up I think.

Listen to when I go by him at 2:35 that high pitched tang, tang, tang, then at 2:47 **** comes to a screaching halt. I couldn't believe we caught Bender on that course and would have beat him. DAMN!!!!

Thanks for dragging me off the course Matt.

I just got mad again watching that ****. wow. wyatt, you need a lovell and ORI struts. they're pretty cheap I think.... :flipoff1:
I think the struts need to happen. And yes watching the whole thing pisses me off. We are stopped WAYYYY TOO much, need to really master those cutting brakes.
Additionally, I think my steering sucks ass. It doesn't steer for ****. To be honest, now that I've had a chance to watch it, and compare. I may have "Fully GOT IT" at places, but overall I'm Sallying around the course, monkey ****ing the shifter trying to get in position to compensate for shitty steering, and body rolling like a mutha.

Re: the aftermath....

The biggest think I noticed on your rig was the steering was VERY slow. On the run where you made it up the really hard course wtih the ledge exits (3rd run I think), what was going on when you were trying to drive into the crowd? When Cole was yelling this way and pointing? Was it steering or just that you couldn't see?

Mine are happening, 3-4 weeks. :flipoff1:.

I thought Kelly was taking your rig back to Kansas? So I take it he left you to fix all the mess underneath. So did it rip out everything or can you just patch and splice. Make sure you get a good look at the pillow block mounting, more than likely it needs some adjusting or it's going to happen again. I 'm going to try and make it to Jellico, web wheelin brings the suck.

Everything Wyatt listed is indeed messed the fawk up. I imagine once it gets cleaned up there will be more items added to the list. We talked about spliced and most thought that was just a bandaid and will have more places for failure to happen. New harness I imagine.

Re: the aftermath....

I'd rather rebuild a transmision than do wiring.

No I was trying to go as far left as possible, and back into a straight run to get speed off that ledge. I had too much body lean to try to go through that rut again. Thats what got me on the way down. I wanted no part of flopping there again. So I was pretty sure if I could get some speed I could jump off that rut and make a run up the hill.

But yes steering was slow. Maybe orbital, maybe ram. Hell I dont know. I just really noticed it when we would come out of an obstacle and power into the open (flat or hill) that it took a while to get back to straight.

No I'll fix it. Contrary to popular thought, I can fix most things. But usually dont have the time to do so, so I pay Kelly.

Yes everything ripped out. I may just get a new harness, and not worry about the whole stretched wires and what not isses. As for the driveshaft and pillow block, it has nothing to do with the mounting. I shock loaded my frontend so hard it bent an airbump can straight out the front of the chassis. So the cast pillow assembly cracked. Then I did it again on that last run coming across a big ass rock. Bender went over it and his rear tire took off tree bark 8ft in the air. I wasn't that bad but I banged it down hard. Thats when the whole top of the pillow broke off. I made it 400 more feet around a hairpin, and a rockpile before a full throttle hill assault before the thing jumped out of the case and started shearing **** off. I heard it knocking as soon as we made the hairpin, and said something to Kelly. But at that point you go 'til you blow. I wasn't about to stop get out and check it out.

I'm going to run all new wires, line, etc. Get Tom Woods to make me a different driveshaft (mine was HAD) and I knew the pillow block and the ag splines on it were a problem. I tightened that block on Saturday a week before the race, and visually inspected it. It was good. I actually carry a spare pillow block just in case.

As for struts I was sold on them on Friday, but then watched the 5-0 buggy on Saturday and now I'm not sure. It just didn't seem like it made it very nimble.

Re: the aftermath....

I am not sold on the struts. I would do coilovers for the price and a sway bar. Just my .02

As far as strategy is concerned, I would do some things different. This is not directed at anyone in particular, but most would apply. Just my opinion, I am not hating.

All of the top 6 teams had the spotter outside of the car. They could get things done faster if they were not having to unstrap and such...no neck brace.

I would keep 20' of winch rope out and wadded up in teh seat or the bumper. The Rockware team did this and was able to winch 2 times and still be top 6. They would just toss the rope on the ground and race out the course. Might need to learn how to tie rope is it gets caught up or have a couple spares. Time is $$

I would try to get out on the course and watch and have some Ninja's fixing my jumk between races. There were some great lines guys missed because they were wrenching and not watching.

Finally, practice. I mean go wheeling. The good drivers out there have years behind the wheel and know a good line from a bad line.

Rockmidget out.....

Before you're too hard on yourself be sure to compare your driving to everybody else's. When I watch all the video I think to myself that I could have done it faster and maybe made some noise. But as I think about it more, there is probably a good reason that people didn't run the course smoothly and quickly. It's probably hard to do. :)

FWIW, when I watched your video I didn't see you doing the fast sections much slower than anybody else with the exception of Rusty Bray. He seemed to go fast on the non-obstacle sections of the course. I'm not sure why he seems to do it faster than most of the pack.
